Packing

I've got a limit of 23 kg of checked luggage and 8 kg for my hand bag plus a separate bag for my laptop. 23 kg correspond to 230 chocolate bars which seems a lot - but unfortunately only about nine Biophysics books fit into 23 kg (assuming one book to be about 2.5 kg – I actually measured this value!). Taking into account the weight of the bag itself which might be about 4 kg, I am left with only seven books.

I am calculating all this stuff in books because I was told that clothes in the US are cheaper and I should buy them there. After a first trial I ended up with about 22 kg for my luggage and one quarter was not even filled with stuff! Then I excluded the two telephone book like bricks and I am below the 20-kg-boundary again.

Maybe it's sensible to take as many clothes as possible, because shopping takes time until you find something you are truly happy with. So I'll see – all the books and other heavy things might go by post or with my parents visiting me. However, I could order some things with amazon or the like, but if I already have books, I will not re-buy them.

Leaving the books I am left with the usual questions: Do I need a hair drier? Should I take more than two trousers? What about backup chocolate?

Courses

Another topic in German (the US American university course system):

Im ersten Jahr des Promotionsprogramms in den USA wird quasi der deutsche Masterabschluss nur ohne Masterarbeit nachgeholt, d.h. man belegt auch ganz normale Kurs. Allerdings geht's in Physik nochmal back to the roots und jeder hört nochmal Klassische Mechanik, Statistische Mechanik und Quantenmechanik I und II. Mit dem Rundumschlag möchte man sichergehen, dass die alle Promovierten die Grundlagen sehr gut beherrschen.

 

GOLD (Gaucho On-Line Database).

Allerdings habe ich in meinem Bachelorstudium in Göttingen schon Klassische Mechanik usw. gehört und habe dann in Rücksprache mit den Dozenten an meiner Uni in den USA einen sogenannten waiver für den Kurs erhalten. Den Kurs brauche ich also nicht mehr zu belegen und kann stattdessen aus den Vorlesungen der Uni frei wählen. Nach langem Durchstöbern der Kursdatenbank habe ich schließlich zwei Engineering Kurse gefunden, in denen es hauptsächlich um Biophysik geht. Bis man den Bogen vom Engineering zur Biophysik gespannt hat, brauchte ich auch eine Weile ;-)

In Deutschland funktioniert die Anmeldung zu einem Kurs meist darüber, dass man einfach zum ersten Termin der Veranstaltung hingeht und sich später für die Klausur anmeldet. Viele Unis haben ein Online-Portal, wo Materialien der Vorlesungen usw. hochgeladen werden.
Ganz anders ist es in den USA: Es gibt Zeitintervalle, in denen man sich für einen Kurs anmelden (register) darf, und ist man am Ende zu spät dran, muss man eine Nachmeldegebühr von 50 US$ zahlen. Außerdem sind die Plätze limitiert und wer keinen Platz bekommt, landet auf einer Warteliste.

Das Creditsystem ist dem deutschen wiederum sehr ähnlich. Es sind aber 12 Credits pro Trimester vorgesehen; der Zeitwert pro Credit ist also ein anderer. Zu meinen 12 Credits gehört auch schon die Arbeit in einer Arbeitsgruppe, die gleich Anfang September losgeht :-) (Vorlesungen erst ab Ende September)

Housing

Since most US students are used to the topic "housing", I'll write in German.

Soeben habe ich auch meine US-amerikanische Anschrift erhalten. Spannenderweise wohne ich für DHL usw. einmal in "Santa Barbara", was die tatsächlich nähere Stadt ist, für die normale US-amerikanische Post aber in "Goleta" - das, was das kleinere Dörfchen nebenan ist.

 Wohnungen der graduate students (Studenten mit Abschluss).

Mein Zimmer gehört zu einer Zweier-WG und meine Mitbewohnerin promoviert in Kommunikationswissenschaften im dritten Jahr. Die Wohnungen wurden von der Uni angeboten, sind aber nicht wie in Deutschland subventioniert. Dementsprechend verdampfen fröhliche 1050 US$ pro Monat von meinem Konto für die Miete. Die Alternative wäre eine Vierer-WG gewesen, in die ich 100 US$ pro Monat weniger investieren würde.

Dafür ist das Zimmer aber auch eingerichtet und eine grobe Küchenausstattung ist auch vorhanden. Allerdings werde ich wohl nicht darum herumkommen, in der ersten Nacht im Hotel zu sein, da ich einfach noch keine Bettsachen und de facto nichts habe. Außerdem braucht man nur aus dem Haus zu stolpern und befindet sich schon auf dem Campus, das ist schon nützlich.

Man sollte auch anmerken, dass die undergraduates, also all diejenigen, die noch keinen Abschluss haben, mit mehreren Leuten in einem Zimmer wohnen (zwei bis sechs Personen). Ein Einzelzimmer in einer Zweier-WG ist also schon ziemlich cool.

Meine Mitbewohnerin ist super nett und hat mir auch schon angeboten, mich vom Hotel oder wo auch immer abzuholen :-) Ich glaube, das wird gut!

Natürlich existiert das Housing erst, wenn es auch eine facebook-Seite hat. Darüber wurde schon die Poolparty angekündigt...

Grad Visit Day

Though I am not in the US yet, I have already visited the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), and the town itself during the Graduate Visit Day. This happened in April and the day is supposed to show all admitted students the university so the can decide where they finally want to go.
About sixty other Physics grad students attended! But probably we will only be about twenty people starting this fall.

UCSB Campus.

I was surprised that the university paid the costs for the hotel and even for the flight from Germany! Nobody could think of similar system in Germany. There is something like an "Open Day" in Göttingen, my home university, but there is no breakfast with professors nor a free lunch with post-Docs and current grad students.
Thanks to everyone who was involved in the organization! All my questions found an answer and I even got sunburned - which was funny when I returned to the rather rainy Göttingen.
